What IS coffee?

Coffee comes from a tropical evergreen shrub known as the coffee tree (genus Coffea). There are 3 species of coffee, and all are of African origin: Arabica, Liberica and Robusta.

Gourmet coffees are almost exclusively Arabica. Having originated in Ethiopia, this type of coffee bean is considered by experts to be the most flavorsome among other higher-yielding species. It is famous for its exquisite flavor, good acidity, clean refined taste, subtle sweetness, excellent body and intense bold aroma. Arabica is also the same type of bean used in Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. Because of these qualities, we use exclusively Arabica Jamaican Coffee Beans.

From tree to cup...

The majestic Blue Mountains run the length of the island of Jamaica. At about 5,000 feet above sea level, the land on this mountain range is thickly wooded, and is maintained by the Jamaican government as a forest reserve. Just below this altitude, the tropical terrain and climate are perfectly suited for the cultivation of Arabica coffee.

At more than 2,000 feet, the altitude at which Blue Mountain Arabica is grown is one of the highest in the world. A mix of rich soil, cool and misty atmosphere, high rainfall and good soil drainage is ideal for producing Arabica.

The coffee is often grown on family owned farms located on steep slopes. It is picked and selected by hand, with stringent supervision and quality control at every step of the process. Coffea Arabica grows to the height of 23-26 feet in the wild, but is cultivated to a height of 7-13 feet, which makes the plant spread wider. The pickers who harvest quality coffees return to each tree several times per year to harvest its berries. Since each tree only yields about 2 pounds of beans per year, a great deal of labor is required to produce each cup of Arabica Coffee.

Because of the unique growing conditions and the extreme care taken with each and every bean, Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is often called the best coffee in the world. It is also more costly than ordinary coffees. However, it is certainly worth the price.
